The Chickens: Our Feathered Friends

Here at Kahiwi we believe in farming with nature, not against it. While our vines are the stars of the show, a crucial part of our vibrant ecosystem is our hardworking flock of chickens. These aren't just any birds; they are integral members of our farming team, contributing daily to the health and vitality of our soil and vines.

Who are they? Our chickens are a lively, curious bunch, free to roam and forage amongst the rows of our vines. They live a natural, healthy life, enjoying the fresh air, sunshine and space. Their presence is a testament to our commitment to biodiversity and a balanced ecosystem.

What do they do for our vineyard?

1. Natural Pest Control: Our chickens are expert foragers, diligently patrolling the vineyard floor. They gobble up a wide array of insects, grubs and other potential pests that might otherwise harm our vines. This natural predation helps keep pest populations in check, reducing the need for external interventions and fostering a healthier environment for beneficial insects too.

2. Fertilising the soil, naturally: As they move through the rows, our chickens leave behind a rich, balanced fertiliser - their manure. This natural input is packed with essential nutrients, slowly released into the soil. Their scratching also helps to lightly incorporate this organic matter, feeding the soil microbes and enhancing the soil's structure. It's a continuous cycle of fertility, building healthier, more resilient soil from the ground up.

3. Soil Aerators and Stimulators: Our chickens are experts at vineyard floor management. They provide gentle aeration to the topsoil. This light disturbance helps improve water infiltration and oxygen exchange, which are crucial for healthy root development and a thriving soil microbiome. They're like tiny, feathered tillers, working to keep the soil alive and breathing.

4. Boosting Biodiversity: By integrating livestock into our vineyard, we're mimicking natural ecosystems. Our chickens add another layer of life and activity, contributing to a richer, more diverse environment. This diversity creates a more robust and resilient vineyard, better equipped to handle challenges and produce exceptional grapes.

Our chickens are more than just farm animals; they are active partners in our ecosystem. They embody our philosophy of working with nature to create a premium product.
